ANEK LINES
ANEK
LINES was the first Greek Company popularly owned, founded in 1967. After the reconversion of a tanker, the first ANEK Ship, in 1972 the Chania-based company started acquiring Japanese ferries.
Mainly on Cretan routes (Piraeus - Chania and Piraeus - Heraklion), in 1987 ANEK started a new sea-bridge between Thessaloniki and Crete, suddenly closed. After this ANEK started
international services with newly acquired “Lato” and
“Lissos” on Patras - Corfu - Igoumenitsa
- Ancona route. These ship set up the standard of a very high-quality service,
so ANEK became the best company on Italy - Greece
routes. This standard was strenghtened by the “El. Venizelos” in 1993, which is currently the biggest
Greek-flagged ferry. In the same year ANEK started services from/to Trieste. In
1994 a new line was opened, the Patras - Igoumenitsa - Bari Line, which
ceased the following year. In 1997 ANEK started direct connections Ancona - Patras, in 1998 acquired a stake in Dane
Sea Line, in 1999 purchased Cretan Ferries and the 50% of LANE by transferring
to the Agios Nikolaos-based
company the ferry “Talos”. In 2001 Anek Lines introduced many news on their ferry services:
the pair of twins “Olympic Champion” and “Hellenic Spirit”, the first two (and
actually unique) newly built ferries of the Cretan company were introduced on Ancona line in 2001; the former two ferries employed in
that service were employed on Trieste line and, the “Kriti
I”, on the Italian domestic line Ravenna - Catania,
which until that year was only performed by Adriatica
di Navigazione. It was very
interesting to see a good passenger ferry on a freight route, but unfortunately
the service was unsuccessful and the “Kriti” twins
were both moved on Piraeus – Heraklion line in 2002. In 2003 ANEK started
also a ro/ro service, rebranded
as Anek Cargo, operated on Piraeus – Heraklion, Patras – Bari and Patras – Venice lines.
