The “Arkadi” started her life as the “Bizan Maru”, deployed between Osaka and Komatsushima. First ship of Rethymno’s popularly-owned company, the “Arkadi” was introduced on Piraeus - Rethymnon route in 1989, departing from Piraeus on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 19.30 and on Sunday at 07.30; from Rethymnon Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at 19.30. Then, after the purchase of “Preveli” the Cretan Ferries’s service become daily from both ports at 19.30. The company merged with Anek Lines in 1999, but the two ferries maintained their original colours until 2000, when they were repainted with ANEK colours; the style of “Anek Lines” mark on the hull of this ship was not the usual one, with an awful aesthetic result. Being the” is the slowest ship of ANEK fleet (only 16 knots with a fuel consumption of 18 tons/hour) and the only one with name on the bow written in Greek characters; the “Arkadi” always had the name on the bow written in Greek characters, however in her last years on Cretan Ferries service, after “Preveli”’s arrival in the fleet, the characters on the bow became latins. So she came back to the roots… how does it spell “Arkadi” in Japanese? Since 2002 she is in service for an Arab Company, co owned by Jordanian, Egyptian and Iraqi interests, linking Aqaba with Egypt.
