Many ferries which are well known on the Greek ferry scene came from Japan, often when they were ten, fiveteen or also twenty years old; the “Rethimnon” was an exception, arriving in Greece when she wasn’t again one year old, soon after the closure of the Kobe – Kawasaki link which she served as “Central No 5”. Apparing as a sister ship of “Candia”, another ex-ANEK ship, however it seems that the two ships were not sisters under the Japanese flag. The aspect of “Rethimnon” seems to me that under the name “Central No 5” was a freighter. I had the occasion to travel aboard her on September 1991 from Heraklion to Piraeus: the impression I remember of this ship is of one small but well mantained. In fact, for Anek Lines, was almost always on PiraeusHeraklion line, serving the PiraeusRethimnon link finally justyfing her name. Was sold in 2001 to Naif Marine Service, an United Arab Emirates company which link UAE’s main port to Bahrain and Iraq.
